Where’s the Roses?

So, first, let me state that I don’t dislike school. Generally, I enjoy going to school and learning things. Afterall, if you don’t like school you don’t go back and get Master’s degrees, or even consider getting Ph.Ds. Nor do I want to quit, and in fact today is just a minor rant, and I’ll be perfectly happy again in a few days. But sometimes, I just really hate all the silly baloney they pile on you, seemingly all at once. Not that I think it’s exactly a conspiracy among my professors, I think I just have bad luck with assignments.

Case in point, this week, on Friday, I have an Arabic language exam on the first eight chapters. Then, I have a presentation to give about Ancient Women and Letter writing, which needs to equal about a two-thousand word paper (in fact, afterwards I have to turn it into said paper). And at some point before noon on that day I must turn in a formal dissertation proposal. Now, understand, none of these things are hard, merely somewhat time-consuming to prepare for. It’s just, they’re all on the same bloody day!

So, this is my problem. I enjoy learning new things, but I don’t enjoy being forced to learn certain things just for a degree. I enjoy discussing what I’ve learned, but I don’t want to try and and dissect every tiny piece of information until it has no flavor left. I want to enjoy my education, not feel bogged down with dead-lines and meaningless details.

Sometimes, you just can’t smell the roses for the manure.

Good luck with the exams and presentation! I feel the same as you – I’m studying Computing and although I love it, my exams are on really obscure aspects of computing and no end of mathematical calculations. I want the degree but jeez, really wish I didn’t have to memorise all of this 😦

Thank you! Everything actually went pretty well, even the exam. And now I’ve had a mostly free weekend to relax!
